Washington, D.C. has gone 12 consecutive days without a homicide, the longest midsummer stretch on record, after President Donald Trump placed the city’s police force under temporary federal control and flooded the capital with National Guard troops and other federal agencies. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the operation—part of the “Making D.C. Safe and Beautiful” task force quietly launched Aug. 7 and expanded Aug. 11—has led to 1,007 arrests and the seizure of 111 illegal firearms. National Guard units are now authorized to carry weapons while patrolling alongside the Metropolitan Police Department, which was formally federalized under emergency powers in the Home Rule Act. Preliminary figures compiled by the Crime Prevention Research Center indicate broader declines in violent crime since the crackdown began, with robberies down 46%, carjackings down 83% and overall violent crime down 22%. Before the intervention, the district had recorded 101 homicides this year—about one every other day. On Monday Trump signed executive orders directing officers to bring federal charges against suspects and threatening to withhold funding from jurisdictions that retain cashless bail systems, moves he said would keep repeat offenders off the streets. The White House has signaled it may replicate the strategy in other high-crime cities.
