President Donald Trump has moderated expectations that he will grant a presidential pardon to Sean “Diddy” Combs, days after reports suggested the idea was under serious consideration. In a Newsmax interview aired 1 August, Trump acknowledged that allies had approached him about clemency for the music executive but said it was “more likely a no,” noting Combs had become “very hostile” after Trump entered politics. Deadline first reported on 30 July that the White House was examining a full pardon for Combs, who was convicted on 2 July of two federal counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. The 55-year-old rap mogul was acquitted of more serious racketeering and sex-trafficking charges but remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Prosecutors told a Manhattan federal judge on 1 August that they now expect sentencing guidelines to call for a term “substantially higher” than the four to five years they initially projected. Each Mann Act count carries a statutory maximum of 10 years. Judge Arun Subramanian that day rejected Combs’ renewed bid for release on $50 million bail, citing continuing concerns about flight risk and public safety. Combs’ lawyers have asked the court to dismiss the convictions or grant a new trial, arguing the sexual activity at issue was consensual and did not constitute commercial prostitution. Sentencing is scheduled for 3 October, leaving the question of executive clemency—should Trump revisit it—unresolved for now.
