Westinghouse Plans To Build 10 Nuclear Reactors In US, Interim CEO Tells Trump – CNBC
Westinghouse Electric Co. plans to build 10 large AP1000 nuclear reactors in the United States, interim Chief Executive Officer Dan Sumner told President Donald Trump during an energy and artificial-intelligence conference at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Construction is slated to start by 2030. Sumner said the program would generate about $75 billion in economic value nationwide, including $6 billion in Pennsylvania, and each reactor would supply electricity for more than 750,000 homes. The announcement dovetails with executive orders Trump issued in May that call for quadrupling U.S. nuclear power capacity and having 10 plants under construction by 2050. Westinghouse, now jointly owned by Cameco and Brookfield Asset Management, built the only two U.S. reactors completed in the past three decades—both at Plant Vogtle in Georgia, a project burdened by cost overruns and delays. The company said it is partnering with Google to deploy artificial-intelligence tools aimed at making AP1000 construction faster and more consistent.
