The French National Assembly has adopted a comprehensive legislative package aimed at the social and economic revitalization of Mayotte, France's poorest department, following the devastation caused by cyclone Chido seven months ago. The key measure is the approval of a programming law for the "refondation" (rebuilding) of Mayotte, which seeks to promote social and economic convergence and achieve real equality on the island. Manuel Valls, who championed the legislation, emphasized its importance in addressing longstanding disparities. In addition to the Mayotte-focused law, the Assembly unanimously passed a proposal to create a formal status for local elected officials. This new status aims to encourage, facilitate, and secure the exercise of local mandates by providing provisions such as indemnities, elective leave, and functional protection. The government has also highlighted priorities for overseas territories, including tackling the high cost of living and enhancing security measures.
