French authorities have detained Russian professional basketball player Daniil Kasatkin at the request of the United States on charges related to cybercrime. Kasatkin is suspected of involvement in a ransomware group that conducted approximately 900 cyberattacks targeting companies and two federal government entities in the US. The arrest took place at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport on June 21. Kasatkin, who had a brief tenure playing basketball at Penn State, denies all charges against him. He is currently held in France pending extradition to the US, although the date for the extradition hearing has not yet been set. Alongside Kasatkin, four youths have also been arrested in connection with the ransomware crimes. The allegations include negotiating payoffs for the ransomware ring. Kasatkin's legal defense has raised concerns about his health as the extradition process unfolds.
