Russia’s flag-carrier Aeroflot cancelled more than 40 flights and delayed at least 10 others on 28 July after a failure in its information systems that prosecutors later confirmed was caused by a cyberattack. Departure boards at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport turned red during one of the busiest holiday weeks, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded or seeking refunds. The Prosecutor General’s Office has opened a criminal case for unlawful access to computer systems, and Aeroflot said specialists are working to restore normal operations. Responsibility was claimed on Telegram by the pro-Ukrainian hacktivist group Silent Crow, which said it acted jointly with Belarusian allies known as Cyberpartisans BY. The hackers asserted that a year-long infiltration allowed them to destroy about 7,000 physical and virtual servers, copy flight-history databases and other files, and take control of employee computers. They threatened to publish leaked data, calling the damage “strategic” and estimating that recovery could cost tens of millions of dollars. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the disruption as “quite alarming,” while senior Duma member Anton Gorelkin said the incident showed that a digital war was being waged against Russia. Aeroflot did not indicate when full service would resume but said affected customers may rebook or obtain refunds once its systems are stable. The attack is one of the most disruptive cyber incidents to hit Russian civilian infrastructure since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, underlining the growing reach of politically motivated hacking campaigns beyond the battlefield.
