French police on Monday detained a man suspected of taking part in a knife fight that left one person dead and another seriously wounded in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, a town of about 20,000 residents in the south-west department of Lot-et-Garonne. The altercation erupted on 3 July in front of restaurant terraces in the town centre, where a man in his thirties was fatally stabbed and a second victim sustained serious injuries. The detainee, described by authorities as homeless, was taken into custody on 7 July and could be brought before prosecutors later in the day. Investigators are still searching for his brother, believed to have fled after the fight and considered a second suspect in the homicide inquiry. Prefect Daniel Barnier said a three-member Groupe de sécurité de proximité will begin foot patrols in the centre of Villeneuve-sur-Lot to reassure residents and shopkeepers and tackle drug-related crime. The prefect added that, despite several high-profile incidents, overall crime indicators for the town do not show a sharp rise.
