A 21-year-old man armed with a knife was shot and arrested after stabbing a riot-control officer on the finish line of the Tour de France’s fourth stage in Rouen on Tuesday, police and the local prosecutor’s office said. The officer, part of a Compagnies républicaines de sécurité (CRS) unit guarding the course, suffered only minor injuries thanks to his protective vest and was treated on site. The incident unfolded at about 15:30 local time as spectators gathered for the end of the 174.2-kilometre stage from Amiens to Rouen. According to the prosecutor, the assailant first threatened a passer-by, then turned his knife on pursuing officers, wounding one before another officer fired a single round that struck the attacker in the thigh. A police source identified the suspect as Ibrahim Yacoub D., a French national who had absconded from a psychiatric hospital on 24 June and was listed as a dangerous individual. He was taken to hospital under guard; his life is not in danger. Prosecutors have opened an inquiry for attempted homicide of a law-enforcement officer. While organisers briefly cordoned off the area, the stage concluded as scheduled and the wider race programme was not disrupted. Authorities said security measures around the Tour would be reinforced for the remaining stages.
