Since early July 2025, eastern Germany has been battling multiple large wildfires affecting the states of Saxony, Brandenburg, and Thuringia. The fires, fueled by a recent heatwave with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius, have burned approximately 2,100 hectares, with one blaze in Saxony consuming over 1,000 hectares and another in Thuringia being the largest in decades. Over 1,000 firefighters, supported by federal police helicopters, military units, and emergency services including 'Super Puma' helicopter crews, have been engaged in firefighting efforts. The fires have forced evacuations in several villages, including the evacuation of a Saxony town, and caused damage to agricultural crops. The terrain and the presence of old unexploded munitions in some areas have complicated firefighting operations. Authorities declared a state of crisis in Thuringia due to the severity of the fires. Despite ongoing challenges, including shifting winds that have spread smoke as far as Berlin, firefighters have gradually gained control over some blazes, notably bringing the fire on Saalfelder Höhe under control. New firefighting strategies are being tested in Saxony to manage the continuing fires. The German Federal Ministry of the Interior acknowledged the extensive efforts of all involved agencies, including the Federal Police, THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief), and local fire departments.
