Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Berlin on Wednesday for talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and to join a series of German-hosted video conferences on the war in Ukraine. The meetings bring together European Union leaders, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. According to the German Chancellery, the first call with EU and NATO participants is scheduled for 2 p.m. local time (1200 GMT), followed an hour later by a separate session that will include Trump. A third conference gathering members of the "coalition of the willing" that supplies Kyiv with military aid is due later in the afternoon. European capitals want to present a united front before Trump meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday—the first U.S.–Russia summit since 2021. EU officials fear the bilateral encounter could sideline Kyiv after Trump suggested territorial "swaps" might form part of a cease-fire deal. Zelensky has ruled out ceding land, warning that any settlement imposed on Ukraine would be short-lived. Russia’s foreign ministry dismissed the Berlin consultations as “insignificant,” but the flurry of diplomacy underscores Europe’s concern that decisions affecting its security could be struck without its participation. Merz and Zelensky are expected to brief reporters in Berlin once the virtual talks conclude.
