U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley completed his 12-man roster on Wednesday, naming Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Cameron Young, Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns as his six wildcard selections. In doing so, the 39-year-old confirmed he will not take on the additional role of player, shelving weeks of speculation that he might become the first American playing-captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. The six picks join automatic qualifiers Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, Harris English and Bryson DeChambeau for the matches against Europe at Bethpage Black from Sept. 26–28. Bradley said forgoing his dream of competing “broke my heart,” but he felt his responsibility was to lead rather than play after several contenders, including Thomas and Morikawa, strengthened their cases late in the PGA Tour season. Pressure to pick himself had mounted after Bradley’s victories at the 2024 BMW Championship and 2025 Travelers Championship and a closing 63 at the Tour Championship. President Donald Trump publicly urged him to become a playing-captain and announced plans to attend the Ryder Cup’s opening day, while former U.S. captain Tom Watson warned that combining duties could distract from strategic responsibilities. Bradley said team performance outweighed personal ambition, noting that his selections “made the decision a lot easier.” Europe’s captain Luke Donald will finalise his own six picks by Sept. 1, as the United States seeks a third consecutive home victory in the biennial contest.
