Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday alleged that Rahul Gandhi told a closed-door meeting of the Congress Political Affairs Committee in Assam that Sarma would "definitely be sent to jail" if the opposition party returned to power. Sarma publicised the remark on social media, describing it as a threat and pointing out that Gandhi himself faces multiple court cases and is currently out on bail. Gandhi, who is visiting Assam, has not publicly responded to the claim. Earlier in the day Sarma dismissed Gandhi’s trip, asking supporters "why waste time on him?" The exchange adds to the escalating personal feud between the Bharatiya Janata Party chief minister and the Congress leader ahead of next year’s national elections.
