Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi visited Guwahati, Assam, on July 16, 2025, for a series of meetings and public engagements. Their itinerary included the Political Affairs Committee meeting, PCC Office Bearers, MPs and MLAs meeting, and a Congress Workers' meeting in Chaygaon. The visit marked their first since Gaurav Gogoi took charge in the state. They also met representatives of various social organizations. During a public rally in Chaygaon, Rahul Gandhi expressed confidence that Congress would win the upcoming Assam assembly elections, highlighting the formation of a new team in the state. Kharge criticized the current Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of corruption and of threatening people under the pretext of detecting illegal immigrants. Kharge also noted that Assam has traditionally been a Congress stronghold and criticized the BJP for only forming the state government by aligning with a former Congress member. The visit drew protests from BJP workers in Kamrup (Rural) near the venue. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dismissed the visit, stating he would not waste time on Rahul Gandhi.
