Gopal Khemka, a prominent businessman and BJP leader in Bihar, was shot dead near his residence in Patna late on July 4, 2025. The attack occurred around 11:30-11:40 pm in the Gandhi Maidan area, with assailants on a motorcycle opening fire on Khemka as he was returning home in his car. Bullet casings and a shell were recovered from the scene, and CCTV footage captured the incident, showing the gunman approaching Khemka's vehicle and fleeing on a bike. Khemka's murder bears resemblance to the killing of his son, Gunjan Khemka, who was murdered in a similar manner six years earlier. Following the incident, Patna police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and conducted a raid at Beur Jail, seizing mobile phones and questioning inmates, linking the murder to the jail. The killing has sparked political criticism, with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi accusing the BJP and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's government of turning Bihar into "India's crime capital." Authorities continue to investigate the case, examining CCTV footage and gathering evidence to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
