India’s Central Board of Secondary Education has instructed all affiliated schools to set up dedicated “Oil Boards” on their campuses, expanding a campaign to curb diet-related health risks among students. In a circular dated 16 July, the board said the displays should highlight the dangers of excessive cooking-oil consumption and offer guidance on healthier eating and regular physical activity. The order builds on CBSE’s 14 May “Sugar Boards” directive, which targeted high intake of added sugars. Both measures form part of a broader effort to tackle rising obesity in India. Citing NFHS-5 data, the board noted that more than 20 % of urban adults are already overweight or obese, while a Lancet Global Burden of Disease study projects the number of overweight adults to climb from 180 million in 2021 to almost 449 million by 2050. Schools have been asked to place digital or static posters in cafeterias and other common areas, print health messages on official stationery, increase the availability of fruit and low-fat options in canteens, restrict sugary drinks and high-fat snacks, and encourage short exercise breaks and walking routes. Prototype designs and additional educational material are available through the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.
