A survey of Scheduled Caste (SC) households in Karnataka has come under intense scrutiny after CCTV footage revealed that enumerators were pasting completion stickers on houses without interacting with the residents. This deceptive practice has drawn criticism from opposition parties, including the BJP and Janata Dal (Secular), who have labeled the survey as bogus and wasteful. The Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has defended the exercise, emphasizing its importance for uplifting poor and backward communities. However, concerns over data accuracy and administrative lapses have been raised, with calls for accountability and punishment for responsible officials. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) acknowledged the issues and confirmed that action has been taken against some government employees involved. The controversy escalated when a house owner named Nandeesh was allegedly assaulted by a BBMP staff member after questioning the unauthorized pasting of survey stickers on his residence. The incident, captured on CCTV, has sparked public outrage and intensified the debate over the legitimacy and conduct of the caste survey in Karnataka. The state had previously spent Rs 165 crore on a caste census in 2015, which was later discarded.
