The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly witnessed disruption after Congress MLA Nana Patole climbed the Speaker's podium and touched the ceremonial mace near the Speaker’s chair, leading to his suspension for one day. Patole, a former Assembly Speaker, raised concerns about the treatment of farmers and demanded action against BJP leaders, particularly BJP MLA Babanrao Lonikar, over controversial remarks about farmers. Patole criticized the state government as being anti-farmer and accused it of failing to address the rising farmer suicides and economic distress faced by farmers in Maharashtra. Opposition leaders, including Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), condemned the ruling party's stance and demanded apologies for derogatory comments against farmers. The issue of farmer suicides has escalated, with reports indicating over 767 suicides in the last three months alone, and some estimates suggesting between 1,100 to 1,200 suicides so far this year. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition figures have accused the BJP government of indifference and failure to provide adequate support to farmers, highlighting increasing debts, rising costs of inputs like seeds and fertilizers, and insufficient government action. The Maharashtra government has assured all possible help to farmers amid mounting criticism.
