Delhi Police have arrested 40-year-old property dealer Utsav Shekhar after an Audi he was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol veered onto a footpath in the Vasant Vihar district and ran over five people as they slept. The collision occurred at around 1:30 a.m. on 9 July, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel. All five victims—migrant workers from Rajasthan—were taken to hospital. An eight-year-old girl and another adult remain in critical condition, while three others are being treated for serious injuries. Investigators say the car crashed into a parked truck moments after the impact, helping officers locate and detain the suspect. Shekhar has been charged with rash and negligent driving causing injury, and further tests are under way to confirm his blood-alcohol level. Police have launched a detailed reconstruction of the incident and are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby petrol-station cameras to determine vehicle speed and point of impact.
