Mumbai Police have booked and briefly detained Rahil Javed Sheikh, the son of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena state vice-president Javed Shaikh, after a video showing him shirtless, apparently intoxicated and hurling expletives at a woman went viral on 7 July. The footage captured the aftermath of a collision in Andheri in which Sheikh’s car allegedly rammed the woman’s vehicle. Influencer-actor Rajshree More, who posted the video, told officers at Amboli Police Station that Sheikh threatened her, boasted of his father’s political clout and offered money in lieu of a complaint. More said the incident occurred shortly after midnight and that Sheikh appeared drunk. Police confirmed an FIR under sections related to drunk driving, criminal intimidation and causing hurt by a rash act. Sheikh was taken into custody for questioning on Monday morning and released later in the day while investigators review additional footage and witness accounts. A medical examination to establish intoxication levels is pending, according to officials. Opposition leaders, including Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Nirupam and BJP spokesperson Ali Daruwala, demanded swift action and criticised what they called a culture of political impunity. The MNS has not yet issued a formal statement. The case adds to recent public scrutiny of road-rage incidents involving relatives of politicians in Maharashtra.
