Delhi Police have arrested Ajay Lamba, alias Bansi, ending a manhunt that stretched for about 25 years. The Crime Branch’s RK Puram team tracked him down using a mix of technical and manual surveillance, officials said on Sunday. Lamba is accused in four robbery-cum-murder cases registered between 1999 and 2001 in Delhi and neighbouring Uttarakhand. Investigators allege he and three associates routinely hired taxis, sedated and killed the drivers, then dumped the bodies in remote Himalayan gorges before selling the stolen vehicles across the Nepal border. Declared a proclaimed offender in 2001, Lamba evaded capture by frequently changing identities and residences, spending a decade in Nepal and later settling in Dehradun. During his time on the run he was arrested twice—once on narcotics charges in 2021 and in a jewellery-shop dacoity case in 2024—but allegedly concealed his real identity on both occasions. Police say the latest arrest could help close several open homicide files involving cab drivers and may lead to additional charges against his suspected accomplices. Lamba is expected to be produced in a Delhi court after initial interrogation.
