A speeding SUV carrying a wedding party smashed into the boundary wall of Janata Inter College in Junawai village of Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district on Friday evening, killing the groom and several companions, police said. Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi told reporters that eight people died and two were critically injured when the vehicle, reportedly travelling at high speed, veered off the road and rammed the wall. An earlier police briefing by Additional Superintendent of Police Anukriti Sharma had put the death toll at five; the figure was revised after rescue teams pulled more bodies from the mangled car. The deceased include groom Suraj, 24, his sister-in-law Asha, 26, her two-year-old daughter Aishwarya, and two minors. The party was travelling from Har Govindpur village to Budaun for wedding ceremonies when the accident occurred. The injured were taken first to the Jewanai Community Health Centre and later referred to a hospital in Aligarh. Police have launched an investigation into the cause, focusing on speeding and possible driver error. Post-mortem examinations are under way, and traffic authorities said additional patrols would be deployed on the stretch, which has a history of accidents.
