The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a large-scale fraud scheme at the customs office of Piraeus Port in Athens, Greece, involving multiple European countries including Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, and Bulgaria. The probe, conducted in cooperation with the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), uncovered a complex network involving ghost companies and rigged customs duties schemes, with Chinese nationals leading and Greek customs brokers implicated. Authorities have arrested eight individuals and seized 4.5 million euros. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office has pressed criminal charges, including felony accusations, against five of the detainees. Concurrently, Greek police conducted a major operation against the Turkish mafia in Athens and Halkidiki, resulting in seven arrests and 12 detentions related to organized crime activities including arms and drug trafficking. In a separate case, the Greek police, dubbed the 'Greek FBI,' dismantled a cocaine smuggling ring that used a method of impregnating raw cattle hides with cocaine. This operation led to six arrests and the discovery of a drug production site in Athens' southern suburbs. Additionally, an international drug cartel operating across four continents and over 10 countries was dismantled by India's Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), with eight arrests and seizures of five consignments, triggering crackdowns in the US and Australia. Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the multi-agency coordination involved in the bust. Lastly, Greek authorities solved a September 2024 armed clash between criminal groups in Piraeus, arresting 12 suspects and confiscating weapons, drugs, and 175,470 euros. At the Mavromati customs office, 14 customs officials were arrested facing charges including forming a criminal organization and bribery, accused of extorting drivers under the supervision of their superior.
