India has taken delivery of a second GE-404 jet engine from the United States for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mark 1A programme, defence officials said on Monday. State-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which integrates the engines, expects to receive 12 units by the end of the current financial year as part of a plan to accelerate production of the single-engine fighter. The shipment is part of a US$716 million agreement signed in 2021 for 99 F404-IN20 engines. Following earlier supply-chain disruptions, General Electric now plans to step up deliveries to roughly two engines a month through March 2026, according to Indian defence officials. The Indian Air Force has ordered 83 Tejas Mark 1A aircraft and is evaluating a proposal for 97 additional jets. HAL aims to lift output to about 30 aircraft a year by 2026-27, supporting New Delhi’s broader goal of expanding the Tejas fleet to more than 300 aircraft across Mk1A and Mk2 variants.
