Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited said it has supplied 48,000 AK-203 assault rifles to the Indian Army from its Amethi, Uttar Pradesh factory over the past 18 months and will hand over another 7,000 units by 15 August. The modernised Kalashnikov-series weapon is being produced under an inter-governmental joint venture aimed at replacing the Army’s decades-old INSAS rifles. The deliveries form part of a July 2021 contract valued at about ₹5,000 crore for more than 600,000 rifles. Licensed production began in January 2023, and the company projects that all components will be sourced domestically by the end of 2025, achieving full indigenisation. Army officials say the AK-203’s improved accuracy and ergonomics suit both high-altitude and counter-terrorism operations. IRRPL’s chief executive, Maj. Gen. S.K. Sharma, described the rifle as a soldier’s “most reliable friend,” adding that the plant is preparing to expand capacity to meet potential export demand from Africa and the Middle East.
