India's Parliament has passed the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, marking a major reform in the country's sports administration. The bill, approved by both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, aims to establish a National Sports Board and a Sports Tribunal to overhaul sports federations, improve governance transparency, and provide athletes with direct representation. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya described the legislation as a structural reform aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, emphasizing an athlete-centric approach and enhanced transparency. The bill addresses longstanding issues of multiple constitutions governing sports federations and legal disputes. Key sports figures, including AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh, Wrestling Federation of India President Sanjay Singh, and Indian Davis Cup captain Rohit Rajpal, have praised the bill for its potential to bring transparency, resolve disputes efficiently, and support athletes. Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha highlighted the bill's role in supporting athletes and expressed optimism about India's aspirations to become a sporting superpower. Concurrently, the Indian Olympic Association has unanimously approved a bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad likely to be the venue. This move is seen as part of India's broader strategy to elevate its status in international sports.
