Organisers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games released the first version of the competition schedule on Monday, exactly three years before the flame is lit. The Games will formally open at 5 p.m. PT on 14 July 2028 with a dual-venue ceremony shared between the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium, and close on 30 July at the Coliseum. Preliminary action in six team sports will begin on 12 July, two days before the Opening Ceremony. In a historic reshuffle designed to maximise global television audiences, athletics will occupy the first week of competition, running 15–24 July at the Coliseum, while swimming shifts to the second week, 22–30 July, inside a temporarily converted SoFi Stadium. The first Olympic champion is set to be crowned in the triathlon along Venice Beach on the morning of 15 July, and the marathon will conclude track and field on the final weekend. Officials project 29 July to be the heaviest medal day, featuring 16 team finals and 19 individual gold-medal events. The programme features the most events in Summer Games history, adding flag football, cricket, squash, lacrosse, baseball and softball to a roster that spans more than 30 venues across Southern California and selected out-of-state sites such as Oklahoma City for canoe slalom and softball. Flag football will run 15–22 July at BMO Stadium in Exposition Park, while tennis finals move to mid-week slots—27 July for women and 28 July for men—in Carson. The Paralympic Games will follow from 15–27 August 2028. Alongside the schedule unveiling, LA28 celebrated more than one million enrolments in its PlayLA youth sports initiative, a US$160 million legacy programme aimed at providing affordable access to Olympic and adaptive sports. Organisers said the timetable will be refined over the next year, with a detailed medal schedule to be published later in 2025.
