The Indian Navy has awarded Bharat Electronics Limited a contract to implement the National Maritime Domain Awareness (NMDA) Project, a programme designed to improve data sharing among maritime agencies and bolster coastal security. The agreement, signed on 8 July in the presence of Vice Admiral Tarun, calls for BEL to deliver the system on a turnkey basis. NMDA will integrate surveillance and communication networks operated by the Navy, Coast Guard and other civil authorities, enabling real-time monitoring of vessel movements across India’s coastline and exclusive economic zone. The upgrade is expected to enhance early-warning capabilities against threats ranging from smuggling to potential military intrusions.
