The highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 continues to affect multiple animal species across the United States and parts of Europe as of mid-2025. In the US, the USDA has reported numerous new cases in wild birds, mammals, and domestic animals. Notably, the total number of domestic cats infected with H5N1 has reached 141, with recent cases in New Jersey and Oregon. Other mammalian cases include rabbits in Maricopa, Arizona, red foxes in Colorado and Virginia, raccoons in Texas and New York, skunks in Texas and Nevada, and harbor seals in Massachusetts and Maine. Wild bird infections remain widespread, with reports of infected hawks, owls, eagles, vultures, geese, and other species across states including Arizona, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, California, Missouri, Minnesota, Wyoming, and others. The USDA has also identified H5N1 in commercial poultry farms in the UK, including premises near Linton-on-Ouse, North Yorkshire, and near Glyn Ceiriog, Wrexham, Wales. Additionally, Spain has reported a new outbreak of H5N1 on a fattening turkey farm in Extremadura. The USDA continues to monitor dairy herds for H5N1, with the total number of infected herds in the US reaching 1,075 since March 2024; recent new infections have been reported in California and Arizona. The USDA has extended the dairy cow milk testing program for H5N1 until September 30, 2025, and several states have joined the list of those considered "unaffected" in bulk milk testing, including Montana and Connecticut. Research has detected the Eurasian lineage goose/Guangdong clade 2.3.4.4b genotype B3.13 circulating in the US. The virus has caused mortality in wildlife such as at least 18 eagles in Michigan. New York State has recently achieved USDA "unaffected" status in its avian influenza testing program. The ongoing situation underscores the persistence and geographic spread of H5N1 across diverse species and regions.
