A newly opened restaurant owned by Indian comedian Kapil Sharma was hit by gunfire in the early hours of 10 July. Surrey Police Service said officers were called at 1:50 a.m. after several rounds were discharged at Kap’s Café on 120 Street in the city’s Newton neighbourhood. Bullet holes were found in windows and adjoining buildings, but no injuries were reported. Investigators recovered spent casings and are reviewing CCTV footage; no arrests have been made and the motive remains under examination. Initial estimates suggest at least nine shots were fired. The café had been operating for less than a week after a soft launch by Sharma and his wife, Ginni Chatrath. Harjit Singh Laddi—a Germany-based fugitive linked to the banned Khalistani outfit Babbar Khalsa International—claimed responsibility in an online post, alleging he was angered by jokes about Nihang Sikhs on Sharma’s television show. Laddi is on India’s National Investigation Agency most-wanted list with a ₹10 lakh bounty. Canadian authorities are working to verify the claim while also probing a possible extortion angle. The incident adds to a series of shootings and intimidation attempts against South Asian businesses in British Columbia and risks further straining already tense India-Canada relations over Khalistan-related violence. Mumbai Police visited Sharma’s residence on 11 July to review security, while Kap’s Café said it will continue operations, calling the attack “heartbreaking” but vowing not to “give up.”

Babbar Khalsa is claiming responsibility for firing at Kap's cafe. If it turns out to be true, then, I think Prime Minister Carney has a problem because he is supposed to be the new broom. He is supposed to sweep clean. He's not supposed to duplicate the permissive attitude of https://t.co/bLg8FrMRhR
