Navarro Offers India 25% Tariff Cut if It Stops Buying Russian Oil
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said the United States is prepared to cut tariffs on Indian goods by 25% if New Delhi stops buying Russian crude, according to television remarks on Wednesday evening. Navarro added that the concession could be implemented as early as tomorrow and framed the move as part of Washington’s effort to restrict Russia’s oil revenue. Navarro also called for preventing both India and China from importing Russian barrels, underscoring the administration’s use of trade measures to influence global energy flows. The comments come as India has continued to snap up discounted Russian crude since Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, helping cushion Russia from Western sanctions. Earlier on Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters he had expected the United States and India to finalize a broader trade accord by May or June but complained that India was “profiteering” from cheaper Russian supplies. The latest offer suggests the Trump administration may tie tariff relief directly to India’s energy procurement decisions as negotiations move forward.
