India’s ruling National Democratic Alliance has nominated Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate for the country’s forthcoming Vice-Presidential election. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s parliamentary board in New Delhi on 17 August, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President JP Nadda and senior ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh. Announcing the choice, Nadda said the coalition would reach out to opposition parties in the hope of securing an unopposed contest. Support quickly emerged from NDA partners, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi and Uttar Pradesh minister Sanjay Kumar Nishad. Shiv Sena (UBT) lawmaker Sanjay Raut also offered positive remarks, calling Radhakrishnan “non-controversial” and experienced. Radhakrishnan, 67, is a former BJP parliamentarian from Tamil Nadu who was appointed Maharashtra’s governor in January 2024. In a statement of thanks, he said the nomination was an opportunity “to serve the nation.” If elected, he would succeed incumbent Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar when the new term begins later this year.
