Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two major National Highway projects in Delhi on August 17, 2025, namely the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). These projects, developed at a combined cost of nearly Rs 11,000 crore, aim to improve connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR) and are expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion by up to 50%, according to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Modi highlighted that the Urban Extension Road-II also contributes to environmental efforts by utilizing large quantities of garbage in its construction, thereby helping to reduce waste accumulation in Delhi. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and other senior leaders, with Modi interacting with construction workers involved in the projects. The developments are seen as part of a broader infrastructure and economic growth initiative for Delhi-NCR. Separately, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) candidate for the Vice Presidential election. BJP national president and Union Minister JP Nadda made the announcement during the party's parliamentary board meeting in Delhi, which was attended by senior leaders including Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and others. The nomination has received support from various political figures and allies within the NDA. Modi expressed his approval of Radhakrishnan's candidacy on social media.
