The 51.38-kilometer Bairabi–Sairang railway line in Mizoram, connecting the state capital Aizawl to the Indian Railways network via Silchar, has been completed and is awaiting inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sanctioned in 2008-09 and completed in 11 years, the project is considered of national importance and features 48 tunnels and over 140 bridges, marking a major boost to connectivity and development in Northeast India. This railway line brings rail connectivity to Aizawl for the first time since India's independence in 1947, fulfilling a 26-year-old aspiration. The new rail link is expected to enhance tourism, especially eco-tourism, and stimulate economic growth in the region. The project aligns with the Modi government's Act East Policy, aiming to accelerate development in the Northeast. Following the inauguration, premium trains like Vande Bharat and Rajdhani Express are anticipated to operate on this route, further integrating Mizoram with the national railway network.
