Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Durgapur on 18 July to lay foundation stones and inaugurate infrastructure projects valued at more than Rs 5,000 crore. He is scheduled to fly in from an earlier engagement in Bihar and proceed directly to Nehru Stadium, where he will preside over the government programme before addressing a Bharatiya Janata Party rally. The package covers oil and gas, power, road and rail assets. It includes a Rs 1,950-crore Bharat Petroleum city-gas distribution network for Bankura and Purulia, dedication of the 132-kilometre Durgapur-Kolkata segment of the Urja Ganga natural-gas pipeline built at a cost of roughly Rs 1,190 crore, and flue-gas desulphurisation retrofits at two Damodar Valley Corporation thermal plants costing about Rs 1,457 crore. Modi will also open the doubled 36-kilometre Purulia–Kotshila rail line (Rs 390 crore) and two road-over-bridges at Topsi and Pandabeshwar constructed under the Setu Bharatam programme for around Rs 380 crore. The visit comes nine months before West Bengal’s 2026 assembly elections. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said the event would showcase the party’s development agenda, while Trinamool Congress leader Kirti Azad urged the prime minister to clarify his long-term plans for the state.
