Police in Rajasthan’s Barmer district are investigating the deaths of a couple and their two young sons, whose bodies were recovered from a water tank outside their home in Undu village late Tuesday. The victims were identified as Shivlal, 35, his wife Kavita, 32, and their sons, aged between eight and nine. Officers say initial evidence, including a handwritten note dated 29 June, points to a collective suicide. The note accuses Shivlal’s mother and younger brother of mental harassment linked to a dispute over a house being built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and requests that the family’s cremation be performed on the same plot of land. Investigators have opened an inquiry under sections related to abetment of suicide and are examining whether family members could face charges. Authorities also recovered a short video that appears to have been filmed shortly before the deaths, showing Kavita dressing one of the boys in bridal attire—a clip that circulated widely on social media after the incident. A forensic team has collected material from the scene, and post-mortem examinations are under way at Bhiyad Hospital. Police say statements from relatives and neighbours will be taken as part of the continuing probe.
