Indian actress Shefali Jariwala, known for her role in the music video 'Kaanta Laga,' died on June 27, 2025, at the age of 42 due to a cardiac arrest. She had been undergoing treatment for several years and was reportedly self-medicating with multiple medicines found at her home. Friends revealed that in her final moments, she was fasting for a Satyanarayan puja and had taken a vitamin C drip without medical supervision. The post-mortem report is awaited, with an official report expected by June 30. Her death has sparked widespread concern over the rising incidence of sudden cardiac arrests among young Indians, highlighting a growing heart disease epidemic in the country. Experts pointed to factors such as low blood pressure, lifestyle habits including smoking, binge drinking, poor diet, lack of exercise, and unsupervised anti-aging treatments as possible contributors. The case has also drawn attention to a surge in heart attack deaths in Karnataka's Hassan district, where over 20 people died from cardiac arrests within 40 days. This spike prompted the Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to form an expert panel led by Dr. C.N. Ravindranath to investigate the causes, including allegations linking the deaths to COVID-19 vaccinations. However, multiple studies and reports by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have found no evidence connecting COVID-19 vaccines to sudden cardiac deaths. Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and other health officials have publicly refuted the vaccine link, emphasizing vaccine safety and the protective benefits against cardiac events. The Karnataka government panel concluded that the rise in cardiac deaths among young adults is real but unrelated to COVID-19 vaccination, recommending the establishment of a cardiac surveillance system and a national registry for sudden cardiac deaths in young populations. Meanwhile, Shefali's husband, actor Parag Tyagi, has shared emotional tributes and urged people to remember her positively. The incident has reignited discussions on preventive healthcare, the risks of self-medication, and the need for awareness about cardiac health among younger demographics in India.
