President Donald Trump on Friday promoted White House Presidential Personnel Director Sergio Gor to serve as United States Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. The appointment, announced on Aug. 22, is subject to Senate confirmation; Gor will remain in his current West Wing post until that process is completed. Gor, 38, has overseen the hiring of about 4,000 political appointees across federal departments and agencies, a portfolio the White House says is 95 percent staffed. A long-time Trump ally who worked on both presidential campaigns and co-founded the former president’s publishing imprint, Gor has been a gatekeeper for administration jobs and a key strategist on personnel policy. The move places a trusted aide in New Delhi at a moment when Washington is looking to deepen security and economic cooperation with the world’s most populous nation. The White House has not yet indicated who will succeed Gor as head of the Presidential Personnel Office.
