President Donald Trump on Saturday said he is nominating State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce to serve as the United States’ deputy representative to the United Nations, a post that carries the rank of ambassador. Bruce has been the public face of the State Department since January, regularly defending the administration’s positions on immigration, Russia’s war in Ukraine and the war in Gaza. Before entering government she spent more than two decades as a Fox News commentator and hosted the streaming programme “Get Tammy Bruce.” Her appointment must be approved by the Senate, where Republicans hold the majority. If confirmed, the 61-year-old would act as the UN mission’s second-in-command and step in for the ambassador as required. Bruce would serve under former national security adviser Mike Waltz, whom Trump nominated earlier this year to become U.S. ambassador to the UN and who is still awaiting a confirmation vote. Announcing the move on social media, Trump said Bruce had done a “fantastic job” at the State Department and would “represent our country brilliantly” at the United Nations.
