Veteran actor, producer and director Dheeraj Kumar died on 15 July in Mumbai after being treated for acute pneumonia. Hospital sources said the 79-year-old was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital over the weekend and placed on ventilator support before succumbing to multiple organ failure around late morning on Tuesday, with his son at his bedside. Kumar broke into Hindi cinema in the late 1960s and went on to appear in films such as Heera Panna, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Sargam and Kranti, while also acting in more than 20 Punjabi productions. In 1986 he founded the production house Creative Eye, which delivered popular television series including Om Namah Shivay, Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann and courtroom drama Adalat, cementing his influence on India’s small screen. Industry colleagues described Kumar as a widely respected and spiritually minded figure whose career spanned almost six decades. His last rites are scheduled for 16 July at the Waghji Bhai Wadi crematorium in Mumbai, with the public invited to pay final respects at his Andheri West residence earlier in the day.
