Brazilian businesswoman Natália Cavanellas Thomazella, 40, died on 7 July while undergoing three elective cosmetic procedures — liposuction, gluteal fat injections and revision of breast implants — at Hospital San Gennaro in eastern São Paulo. According to a police report filed by her sister, Cavanellas suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest near the end of the surgery. The case was registered as a suspicious death and the body sent to the state forensic institute, which will determine whether an embolism was responsible, as the surgical team suspects. The operation was led by plastic surgeon Edgar Lopez, a Peruvian physician who runs an upscale clinic in the city and was removed from the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery in 2021. Lopez’s office said all pre-operative tests were normal and called the complication “a rare event”; nevertheless, São Paulo’s Civil Police and the regional medical council (Cremesp) have opened parallel investigations. Lopez says he is assisting authorities and the patient’s family. Less than a month earlier, Brazilian singer and social-media influencer Ana Bárbara Buhr Buldrini, 31, died at a private clinic in Istanbul after liposuction, breast augmentation and rhinoplasty arranged through a promotional agreement with Tusa Hospital. Her husband told Brazilian media the procedures were moved forward with little preparation, and the clinic said she succumbed to an “unexpected complication” despite 90 minutes of resuscitation attempts. Turkish prosecutors have launched a formal inquiry. The two deaths — one abroad and one at home — have intensified scrutiny of the booming cosmetic-surgery market for Brazilians. Brazil already performs one of the highest numbers of aesthetic procedures worldwide, and medical authorities say they will review safety protocols and oversight as investigations progress.
