Alaska authorities have recovered the body of Dr. Marites Buenafe, a 62-year-old Kentucky physician who vanished after leaving the Norwegian Bliss for a solo hike while the cruise ship was docked in Juneau. Buenafe texted relatives at about 7:30 a.m. local time on 1 July saying she was taking the Mount Roberts Tramway and planned to hike the Gold Ridge–Gastineau Peak route. Security cameras confirmed her arrival at the top of the tramway. When she failed to return for the vessel’s 1:30 p.m. departure, she was reported missing at roughly 3:15 p.m. More than a dozen rescuers from Alaska State Troopers, Juneau Mountain Rescue and other agencies searched the area with ground teams, drones, K-9 units and helicopters. An Alaska Army National Guard helicopter crew located her body shortly before noon on 3 July about 1,700 feet below the Gold Ridge ridgeline; crews later recovered the remains with assistance from a private helicopter operator. Next of kin have been notified, and the body has been sent to the state medical examiner for autopsy. The investigation into the cause of death is ongoing, and Norwegian Cruise Line said it is cooperating with authorities and providing support to the family.
