Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the world's leading electric-vehicle battery manufacturer, has initiated construction on a $6 billion battery material ecosystem in Indonesia. This joint venture with an Indonesian state-owned enterprise aims to establish a comprehensive battery supply chain, leveraging Indonesia's abundant nickel resources. The project is expected to have a total battery production capacity of 15 gigawatt-hours (GWh), sufficient to power approximately 250,000 to 300,000 electric vehicles annually. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has acknowledged the groundbreaking as a milestone in the country's rapidly expanding electric vehicle supply chain, which is increasingly supported by Chinese investment. The plant is projected to become operational by the end of 2026. Despite concerns raised by non-governmental organizations regarding environmental safeguards, the initiative represents a strategic move by CATL to expand its manufacturing footprint beyond China and strengthen Indonesia's position in the global EV battery market.
