Thomas Trikasih Lembong, Indonesia's former Minister of Trade from 2015 to 2016, was sentenced to four years and six months in prison and fined Rp 750 million for corruption related to sugar importation policies during his tenure. The court found that his actions caused state losses amounting to approximately Rp 194.7 billion. Despite the prosecution's initial demand for a seven-year sentence and a higher financial penalty, the court issued a reduced verdict. Both Lembong and the Attorney General's Office have filed appeals against the verdict. On July 22, 2025, Lembong's legal team officially submitted a notice of appeal, expressing confidence in a fair decision from the appellate court. The Attorney General's Office also confirmed it would appeal the ruling. Subsequently, on August 1, 2025, President Prabowo Subianto granted Lembong an abolisi, a form of legal pardon that terminates the ongoing legal process and releases him from custody. This presidential decision was approved by the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) and was accompanied by an amnesty for Hasto Kristiyanto, Secretary General of PDI-P. The Ministry of Law and Human Rights confirmed the issuance of the presidential decree formalizing the abolisi and amnesty. Legal experts and political figures, including Anies Baswedan and Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra, acknowledged the constitutional basis and political motivations behind the pardon, emphasizing national unity and political stability. Lembong was released from Cipinang Detention Center on the same day, with supporters present to welcome him. The Attorney General's Office and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) have expressed respect for the presidential decision. Lembong's defense lawyer stated that all administrative procedures for his release had been completed. The abolisi effectively ends Lembong's legal case related to the sugar import corruption allegations. Lembong, a Harvard University alumnus, maintained his innocence throughout the trial, and his legal team denied any personal financial gain from the alleged corruption.
