Indonesia marked its 80th Independence Day on August 17, 2025, with a series of grand celebrations primarily centered in Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto led the main flag-raising ceremony at the Istana Merdeka, marking his first time presiding over the event as president. The theme for this year's commemoration was "Bersatu, Berdaulat, Rakyat Sejahtera, Indonesia Maju" (United, Sovereign, Prosperous People, Advanced Indonesia). The ceremony featured a procession of the national flag from Monas to the palace aboard the Kereta Kencana Garuda Prabayaksa, with 76 Paskibraka members participating in the flag-raising duties. Cultural elements were prominent, with President Prabowo wearing traditional Betawi attire and other officials donning various regional costumes. The day included a military airshow with TNI AU fighter jets forming the number "80" over Monas and Istana Merdeka, a parachute display by Kopassus troops, and a cultural carnival featuring a parade from Monas through key Jakarta landmarks like Sudirman and Thamrin avenues. The government also held a public festival for the first time at the Istana Merdeka and Monumen Nasional areas, drawing large crowds. Unique regional celebrations took place, including an underwater flag-raising in Maluku Utara and cultural events in Papua Barat Daya and Surabaya. The festivities were broadcast live on KompasTV, which also aired special programming reflecting on Indonesia’s journey since independence. The day concluded with the ceremonial lowering of the flag at the Istana Merdeka. Additionally, the event saw participation from prominent Indonesian figures such as Megawati Soekarnoputri, who led a separate ceremony with PDI-P cadres, and public personalities including Raffi Ahmad and Nagita Slavina. The celebrations were accompanied by extensive security involving nearly 10,000 personnel. International leaders, including those from Singapore and ASEAN, extended congratulations to Indonesia on this milestone.
