Indonesian rescuers on Friday resumed an expanded search for around 30 people who remain missing after the ferry KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank in the Bali Strait, killing at least six, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said. More than 160 personnel backed by navy ships, coast-guard craft, helicopters and drones are sweeping a widening area after operations were briefly suspended overnight because of rough seas and poor visibility. The roll-on/roll-off vessel, carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members and 22 vehicles, issued a distress call at about 11:35 p.m. local time on Wednesday before going down roughly 30 minutes after departing Ketapang port in Banyuwangi, East Java, for the short crossing to Gilimanuk on Bali. Basarnas said 29 people were pulled alive from the water in the hours after the accident. Deputy operations chief Ribut Eko Suyatno told reporters that waves of up to two metres and strong currents continued to hamper divers and surface vessels. Three helicopters and a thermal-imaging drone are being used to scan the strait while navy ships replace smaller boats that cannot operate safely in the conditions. Survivors have told investigators they noticed water entering the engine room shortly before the ferry listed and capsized. Authorities are probing potential mechanical failure, weather and loading practices. Ferry disasters are common in Indonesia’s 17,000-island archipelago, where lax enforcement of safety rules has led to a series of fatal sinkings in recent years.
