A series of earthquakes struck the Sarmi Regency in Papua, Indonesia, beginning with a magnitude 6.3 to 6.5 quake on August 12, 2025, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The initial earthquake occurred in the eastern Indonesian region of Papua, shaking areas northwest of Abepura. Despite the quake's strength, authorities confirmed there was no tsunami threat. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) later reported a subsequent magnitude 5.0 earthquake in the same region on August 14, also without tsunami potential. The earthquakes affected six districts within Sarmi Regency, with the eastern coastal areas experiencing the most impact. BMKG issued warnings for possible aftershocks and advised caution. Additionally, heavy rains during the dry season raised concerns about flooding and landslides in other parts of Indonesia, such as Cilacap and Banyumas.
