BREAKING - Magnitude 6.5 earthquake hits Papua in eastern Indonesia: USGS
A magnitude-6.5 earthquake struck Indonesia’s Papua province on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake was centred about 193 kilometres north-west of Abepura at a depth of 10 kilometres. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed there is no tsunami threat, and Indonesian authorities have not yet reported casualties or significant damage. Separately, Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted twice within 90 minutes on the same day. Indonesia’s volcanology agency recorded ash columns rising as high as 1.6 kilometres and maintained the volcano’s Level II “Waspada” alert, urging residents and climbers to stay at least three kilometres from the crater and to prepare for possible lahar flows during heavy rain.
