Israel’s 21-month war in Gaza has triggered a wave of battlefield-tested technology ventures founded by army reservists who combine combat experience with high-tech expertise. Startup Nation Central counts that more than one-third of the defence-tech firms it tracks were created after the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023. Around 20 percent of Israel’s reservists work in the civilian tech sector, providing a deep talent pool for the nascent industry. Companies such as SkyHoop—which has built a wearable mobile-phone-based sensor to warn troops of incoming drones—are attracting capital that previously shunned the defence field as over-regulated and unpredictable. U.S. and Israeli venture-capital investors have poured new money into the sector, while Protego Ventures, co-founded by reservist Lital Leshem, has raised roughly $100 million and reviewed some 160 firms with plans to back several this year. The surge coincides with record overseas demand for Israeli hardware. Defence Ministry data show exports hit $14.8 billion in 2024, with Europe accounting for more than half of sales, up from 35 percent a year earlier. European militaries are replenishing stocks depleted by aid to Ukraine and preparing for a planned NATO requirement that members devote 5 percent of GDP to security spending. Despite boycott calls over civilian casualties in Gaza, Israeli officials say clients continue to prioritise combat-proven systems, offering a potentially lucrative—though politically fraught—path to growth for the country’s expanding defence-tech ecosystem.
