Former Progressive Socialist Party chief Walid Jumblatt said he “condemns the Israeli attacks on Damascus” during an interview broadcast on Syria TV on 16 July. Jumblatt is the most prominent Lebanese party leader to react publicly to the latest Israeli strikes on the Syrian capital. Jumblatt added that he is in contact with the Syrian government in an effort to ease tensions in the southern governorate of Suwayda, where protests have flared in recent months. He said some members of the Syrian army and security forces had committed unspecified violations in the largely Druze region. Separately, Lebanon’s prime minister issued a statement the same day denouncing the Israeli air raids on Damascus. Neither Beirut nor Damascus reported casualties from the strikes, and Israel has not commented.
