Operations at Milan’s Malpensa Airport were disrupted on 20 August after a man armed with a hammer smashed check-in screens and set fire to rubbish bins in Terminal 1. Flames and smoke prompted airport staff to evacuate part of the departures hall while firefighters extinguished the blaze. The suspect, identified by Italian media as a Malian national with legal residency in Milan, was restrained by security personnel and arrested on charges of property damage and assault. One employee of airport operator SEA sustained minor injuries during the scuffle. Lombardy Airports Association said the incident was quickly contained, but warned that the closure of roughly half of the check-in zone could lead to delays or cancellations of some departures until full operations are restored. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the attack.
